Week 4: Love

My parents celebrated their 50th anniversary last Saturday. This photo was taken after they had just finished playing a Newlyweds-style game where they answered questions about one another. Ladies, lest you dismay that your husband does not listen to you, think again. My dad—who in my memory was frequently on the receiving end of my mom’s “Honey. Hon. Honey! Are you listening to me?”—he absolutely smoked my mom in this game. Be warned.

The photo is somewhat pedestrian (technically a challenge for me because their skin colors are so different and I don’t know Photoshop), but in this photo I see a few things. When they were married 50 years ago the restaurant they chose for their celebration wouldn’t serve them because they’re a mixed race couple, so I see courage and self respect. After 50  years they still laugh at themselves and at each other, so I see humor. They are about as close to the perfect parents as you’ll ever find, so I see my good fortune. My mom has wrinkles and my dad is bald but they’re still attractive to one another, so I see an irrelevant passage of time. Everyone they love is sitting just a few feet in front of them, so I see complete happiness and lots and lots of love. Happy Anniversary mom and dad.
